Hamlet to make North American debut at The Kennedy Center

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Hamlet, starring Paapa Essiedu, will make its North American debut at The Kennedy Center, running May 2-6, 2018.

Hamlet at the Kennedy Center will mark this rising star’s U.S. debut in the role. Paapa Paapa Essiedu as HamletEssiedu won “Best Performance in a Play” at the UK Theatre Awards and received the Ian Charleson Award in 2016. Essiedu has appeared in RSC productions of The Mouse and his Child and The Merry Wives of Windsor and is also known to UK audiences for his roles in the popular television series Utopia and Not Safe for Work Simon Godwin directs the production. The critically lauded production won raves for both Godwin’s vision of Hamlet’s Denmark as a state in west Africa and Essiedu’s revelatory portrayal. 

Additional casting will be announced at a later date. Hamlet is designed by Paul Wills with lighting by Paul Anderson. Music for the production is composed by Jamiroquai percussionist Sola Akingbola. Sound is by Christopher Shutt.
