Review: “Phantom of the Opera” dazzles at the Kennedy Center with fresh take on beloved opera

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera”  has come to D.C. with a fresh, re-imagined take with Cameron Mackintosh’s new production. The opera is playing at The Kennedy Center.

PhantomLong time fans of the opera will be thrilled with the dazzling new set, lighting and design. The special effects also draw the audience into the opera as well. Without giving too much away, it’s safe to say that theatre-goers will really get to really experience a few pivotal moments. This is not your grandmother’s Phantom of the Opera. It’s new and improved without losing any of the musical greatness that has made it such a beloved opera. It’s bigger, bolder and has a fresh, yet still familiar feel.

Chris Mann, originally of The Voice fame leads the cast as The Phantom. His understudy, Eric Ruiz did an admirable job during the matinée performance on Saturday, as did Krista Buccellato in the role of Christine, normally played by Julia  Udine.  The to-capacity crowd gave the entire cast a rousing standing ovation.

The brilliant chorus numbers include “Masquerade” and “Prima Donna.” Anne Kanengeiser does a great turn as Madame Giry and Jacquelynne Fontaine evokes laughter as soprano Carlotta Giudicelli.  This time around, songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “Masquerade” are performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making it one of the largest touring productions currently on tour.Phantom of the Opera at Kennedy CenterThe compelling story of love, mystery and unrequited love has a wonderful mix of classical and rock opera musical numbers that have sustained the longest running musical in Broadway history, as it celebrates  its 28th anniversary this year.
